Inspiration & Background

If you live by the sea, a leisurely stroll along the beach is one of the free pleasures and a kind of short vacation for the soul. I find it particularly relaxing to look for washed-up treasures on the edge of the beach: shells, finely sanded pale wood, a cork and – surprisingly many – apricot kernels. I almost always get an incredible desire to build something out of these natural components.

This figure was not only made from washed-up finds, but also from parts that I found on walks in the forest and on the Alvara. And because they are all finds from the island, I made an islander out of it. A person who has been anchored to this soil for generations and is just as weather-beaten, bent by the wind and just as brittle and indomitable as the island itself. It is a man who is battling the infamous snowstorm (which even has its own name), a lost sheep tucked under his arm.
